Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 02, 2015 (SKNIS): During remarks at a sitting of the St. Kitts and Nevis Parliament on Tuesday (June 30), Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris outlined for the nation, efforts within the Ministry of National Security to address crime.

The Prime Minister informed that the Police Force has developed a six point plan to arrest crime in the federation over the short and medium term. He said the plan covers crime prevention, intelligence led policing, targeted operations, increased collaboration with other agencies, engagement with stakeholders and continuous improvement and administration. The plan he said will be put before the cabinet for review shortly.

Outlining efforts in crime prevention, the Prime Minister gave insight into the increased utilization of the mobile command unit, which has enhanced police presence throughout the island. “The unit is deployed daily and serves both as a deterrent to crime while allowing the Police to reach out and develop closer bonds in these communities,” he said.

The unit has been present in the communities of Taylors, Conaree, Saddlers and Fig Tree thus far and more officers are being trained to operate the mobile unit in order to maximize the use and effectiveness of the unit.

Building capacity within the Police Force and the embrace of crime fighting technology were areas also addressed. Prime Minister Harris informed that the Crime Scene Unit has procured more state of the art equipment to enhance its forensic work with ballistics tracking. The equipment will support a cadre of force personnel who were recently trained by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm and Explosives (ATF) in firearms examination and ballistics. “Ongoing partnerships continue to provide capacity building through training opportunities for force members,” he said.

“The use of CCTV in crime fighting and prevention is still viable and is being vigorously pursued,” said Prime Minister Harris, while adding that a number of cameras are presently installed around Basseterre and other areas and also in Nevis. “The cameras are monitored 24 hours a day,  and it is government’s intention to expand the CCTV coverage about St. Kitts and Nevis to ensure wider coverage of monitoring “hotspots” in the federation” he shared.

Prime Minister Harris also informed that a contingent of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defense Force personnel have augmented the Police on Nevis and the partnership has begun to yield results. Prime Minister Harris took the opportunity to express the government’s gratitude to the soldiers and the police officers on Nevis.
