Tridents at top of table after trouncing Zouks

Celebration time

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EXCELLENT bowling performance from the Barbados Tridents last evening (Jul. 1) powered them to a 15-run victory over the St. Lucia Zouks in the 2015 Hero CPL at Warner Park to remain at the top of the table.

The Tridents opted to bat first and their innings failed to gather momentum in the early stages of the match as their batsmen struggled to regularly find the boundary. The opening pair of Dwayne Smith and Dilshan Munaweera however had a partnership of 45; the only pair to score more than 40 runs in the Tridents’ innings.

However Shoib Malik was the glue to their innings stroking 51 from 34 balls, but he could not have found a partner to hang around and build the score.

The Tridents in the end could have only mustered 148-8 from the allotted 20 overs.

In their pursuit, Zouks got off o a good start scoring 12 off the first over but received their first setback in the second over when Johnson Charles was bowled by Roben Peterson for five.

They then lost Kevin Pietersen in quick order through the run out route following a mix up with Andre Fletcher to leave the Zouks on 24-2.

Fletcher however steadied the ship with a brilliant 50 as he and Ross Taylor rebuilt the innings with a 54-run partnership before the former went for 52.

The game then hung in the balance following Fletcher’s departure but suddenly took a turn for the worst when the ball was given to Jeevan Mendis, who took two wickets from two balls to leave the Zouks on 84-5.

Needing 66 from 40 balls with five wickets in hand, Henry Davids took to the crease but quickly fell victim to a brilliant catch off the bowling of Tridents captain Kieron Pollard.

The Zouks now needed 48 off four overs and their captain, Darren Sammy, joined Nathan Mccullum with the hope of  securing victory, but Sammy played one shot too many in his attempt reach the boundary and skied a delivery that was taken by the wicketkeeper.

Zouks in the end fell short by 15 runs and succumbed to their second straight defeat, while the Tridents bounced back with that win following their defeat by the Patriots last Saturday.

Sammy indicated that it was disappointing that his team failed to chase down the Tridents after his team restricted them to a “gettable total”. He however blamed the lack of partnerships and losing in clusters for his team’s poor batting performance.

The Barbados Tridents are now back at the top of the table and the Man of the Match award went to Shoib Malik.
