BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - IN his first Parliamentary presentation since being elected as the Representative for the people of Constituency Number Three, the Hon. Konris Maynard has pledged to champion the cause of the nation’s youth while being “a reasonable voice on the Opposition”.

The youngest Parliamentarian to have been elected during the recent General Elections, Maynard attended for a session of the August Body on Tuesday (Jun. 30), joining his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party colleagues of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.

“Although I am the youngest, I am comforted by the good book when it says a child shall lead them. In fact, although this is my first stint as an elected member, I have spoken in this Honourable House before as a Youth Parliamentarian long before many of my colleagues opposite.

“Although I represent all the people of Number Three, the young people in Constituency Number Three and across the entire nation must know that I will ensure that their needs and concerns will be addressed in this Honourable House. I understand you as young people, so I can speak with you and for you,” Maynard declared.

Maynard said he was thankful for being chosen by the people of Constituency Number Three to serve and represent them, noting that his grandfather would have been proud of his accomplishment.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank from the bottom of my heart the good people of Constituency Number Three for reposing their utmost confidence in me, placing me here in these hallowed halls…on their behalf.

“…My grandfather, a cane cutter from the West Basseterre area, would have been heartened to see that his grandson, who used to run to him when he was coming home on his donkey, now sits as a Member of Parliament representing Constituency Number Three.”

Further expressing his commitment as a Member of the Honourable House, Maynard said: “I trust that this House will remain honourable and I commit to being a responsible voice on the Opposition adhering to the highest principles of good governance and democracy.

“Let it be clear that being a responsible Member on Her Majesty’s Opposition means that those vested with the powers to govern this beautiful country will be held accountable for all of their actions by us as representatives of the people who elected us.”
