Man shot by The Circus in Basseterre

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man is currently warded at the JNF General Hospital after being shot last night (Jul. 3) in the vicinity of The Circus on Fort Street in Basseterre.

     

    The shooting victim’s name was given as Akeem Chumney of Upper West BourneStreet, Basseterre.

    According to Police PRO Inspector Lyndon David, initial investigations by the Violent Crime Unit revealed that at about 11:45 last night, Chumney was attacked and shot at The Circus by an unknown assailant or assailants and was transported to the hospital.

    This publication however learnt that while Chumney was walking among a group of men from McKnight in the vicinity of The Circus, an individual or individuals opened fire in their direction and he was struck multiple times in the upper region of his back.

    According to a WINN FM’s report, after Chumney was wounded, “his companions then tried to commandeer a Domino's delivery vehicle as it drove through the Circus”.

    The media house further stated that reports indicated that the driver was struck in the face and pulled from the vehicle, which still moving, and one of its doors that was open struck a bus.

    WINN FM also stated it was reported that an off duty police officer, who was in the area, was able to bring the vehicle to a halt and one of the men in the attempted carjacking was in police custody.

    However, when SKNVibes sought confirmation on the man in custody, Inspector David stated that such report did not reach his office.

    He however indicated that the police are again seeking the public’s assistance.

    “Anyone who has information pertaining to this incident is asked to contact the Violent Crime Unit at 467-1886, 467-1887 or 467-1888, the nearest police station or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477(TIPS). Remember, you do not have to provide your personal information, and you may be eligible to receive a reward.”
