Restaurant Week Vibes: Nirvana

By: Adam Anderson, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - UP by Fairview Great House there's a slice of Heaven…or should I say Nirvana. I walked up the hill and noticed a stone wall leading up to a flight of stairs. I climbed the hand crafted stone steps and atop of the hill a historic white colonial house reside. I then walked on to the gallery and noticed a small pond to my left.

Mukesh, the manager, greeted and welcomed me to Nirvana. He introduced me to my waiter and I ordered a cup of coffee. The place is beautiful. Red walls lined the cherry wood floor as red lanterns hung overhead. The beautiful glass tables stood with traditional red and yellow Oriental cloth fashioned across. It was quite serene as I looked over the green grass and grey walls.

I sipped from the porcelain mug. The coffee was nice, strong and deliciously bitter. The waiter showed up shortly after and brought a healthy helping of honey-glaze crispy fish. She laid the fish across the white plate and at first glance I could tell it was fried and delicately dipped in a tangerine colored sticky sauce. Scallions and onions garnished the top.

I took my first bite and the fork clicked the table due to the crunch of the fish. Inside revealed a thin piece of pearl colored meat. I grew eager and took my first bite. It was delicious! Sweet and savory and the flavour only something fried provides. Light fish flavour hid between the blanket of breading. I quickly shovel the onions and fish and couldn't help but want more. In hindsight, I should have ordered the white rice but, to be honest, I couldn’t complain.

I finished up the remainder of the plate feeling content as I sat peacefully listening to oriental music. It’s quite relaxing! The server returned to pick up the plate in arrival of the banana egg rolls.

There laid a mouth-water assortment of two fried filo dough egg rolls drizzled in chocolate with a perfect scoop of ice cream. I dug into the ice cream first. Hagen-Daz… Cream coloured velvet ice; French vanilla. I instantly knew because it’s my favorite! Progressing to the eggroll I cut into it with my fork. Each layer carefully cracked as I applied pressure. The moist banana became a sweet and tangy medley as they were cooked in the savory filo sheet. In conjunction with the ice-cream, it was a nice contrast of hot and cold. 10/10 I would eat this again!

The plate empty with not a lick of chocolate and Mukesh insisted I try the Bush-Tea Affair…I’m not going to lie, it hit the spot! Fresh herbs garnished the glass. I took my first sip and it was light and refreshing. It was smooth and sweet with every sip. I thoroughly enjoyed the Appleton Rum Cocktail. He showed me how he makes it in the video below.

I sat back and enjoyed the view. I could get used to this little piece of Nirvana. I decided and finished the glass by the pool as the sun hit my face.

I’m telling you, go to Nirvana during Restaurant Week if you are looking for a serene getaway. I’ll see you there.
