Taiwan Today, 17th July 2015 - President Ma Ying-jeou said July 15 that the ROC and Nicaragua enjoy firm and stable ties, and he looks forward to expanding bilateral collaboration with the diplomatic ally going forward.

“Economic exchanges between the two nations are steadily expanding,” Ma said. “This underscores the value of a free trade agreement inked by Taipei and Managua that took effect in 2008.

“Many Taiwan businesses have invested in the Nicaragua since 1990, and I hope to see more following suit.”

The president made the remarks during a tour of a Taiwan-owned production facility in Managua. Later the same day, Ma met with his Nicaraguan counterpart Daniel Ortega and discussed the state bilateral relation. He also invited the Central American leader to visit Taiwan later this year.

During the meeting, Ortega requested assistance with irrigation and port projects. Ma said the government will conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine the kind of support the ROC can offer.

The next stop on Ma’s itinerary was a product display center for micro, small and medium enterprises. The facility is result of the Zero Hunger project and low-rate microloan program jointly implemented by the two allies.

Describing the initiative as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when partners tackle a task shoulder to shoulder, the president said financial assistance and skills training under the project have helped numerous farmers and women improve their lots in life.

“Three frozen storage facilities for dairy products, seeds and vegetables inaugurated last month under the bilateral framework agreement for technical assistance will further boost the global competitiveness of the Nicaraguan agricultural sector,” he added.

In addition, Ma said the ROC will continue offering geological information and satellite imaging through Formosat-2 to help Nicaragua in disaster prevention.

Nicaragua is the final stop on the president’s three-nation visit to Latin America. He will transit in Los Angeles before touching down July 18 in Taiwan. (SFC-JSM)
