US$1.5M grant from Japan for fishing industry

Hon. Eugene Hamilton

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has inked a deal with the Japanese Government for a US$1.5M-grant for the procurement of equipment to advance the fishing industry in the Federation.

Minister with responsibility for Marine Resources and Fisheries, the Hon. Eugene Hamilton told SKNVibes that during the recently-concluded meeting of Ministers with responsibility for Fishing held in Antigua, that the deal which was in the making for some time was finalised.

“…I engaged the Japanese Vice Consul, the team from Japan on a whole, which, of course, included the Ambassador from Japan who is resident in Trinidad, on the whole notion of sustainable use of fishing and the procurement of scientific data with regard to fishing, including whales. And we have on that occasion signed an agreement.”

Hamilton explained that a 28-foot boat and two refrigerators are among the items to be procured from the grant.

“It involves a boat, a 28-foot boat that would be manufactured in Japan, to be operated by the Department of Fisheries and of course it would be used for training fishermen, for doing research around some of the FADS (Fish Aggregating Devices) that we have put down, which are used to attract large pelagic fish. And of course we are also going to be moving towards putting down submersible FADS, because the surface FADS sometimes get in the way of the fishing lane and get clipped and disappear.

“Included in that grant are two environmentally-friendly freezers; one for Basseterre and the other for Old Road. We want to be able to secure fish that we purchase. And there is also going to be one of those imported high-powered saws for cutting fish that would be put in Old Road, because Basseterre already has one.”

The Minister indicated that there are other items which would be purchased with the grant and these, he noted, are expected to provide needed assistance to fishermen and by extension the industry.

“And, of course, in that number of items to be procured would be a refrigerated truck; a truck which would allow for fish that would be collected from around the island to be refrigerated even before being brought to the Fisheries.

“We know that this would go a long way to help the fishermen in handling their catch and help the Department of Marine Resources and Fisheries to ensure that the fish they are selling to people are in good condition…”
