    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOUR nationals pursuing higher education outside of St. Kitts and Nevis were the recipients of this year’s TDC Group of Companies’ Michael L. King Scholarship Grant.

    At a simple but significant ceremony held yesterday (Jul. 21) at the TDC Training Room, the four scholars, Andre Tyrell and Akheam Fox from St. Kitts, and Charles Bussue and Joyce Moven from Nevis, each received a monetary grant of US $5 000 intended to help defray costs that are usually incurred by students studying abroad.

    In his opening remarks, Chairperson the Michael L. King Scholarship Committee, Dr. Clive Ottley gave a brief background of the grant, noting that apart from this year’s awardees, 27 scholarships have been awarded since its inception in 2008.

    A past awardee, Karisha Tross, also briefly addressed the gathering. She reflected on 2009 when she applied for the scholarship and had successful graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Economics and Accounting.

    Quoting the late Nelson Mandela, Tross said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

    Education Officer in the Federal Ministry of Education Debbie Isaac echoed the sentiments of those before her in thanking TDC for its contribution over the years to the deserving recipients in the Federation.

    Isaac went on to say that the Government could not do it alone and the Ministry is grateful for having companies such as TDC. She implored the awardees to return home after their studies to put an end to the “brain drain” in the Federation.

    The feature address was given by the Chairman TDC Group of Companies, Earle Kelly, who told the awardees that Michael L. King is a former Director of TDC and had been with the entity since its inception in 1993.

    He explained that King had retired as Chairman and CEO of TDC in February 2001 but had remained on the Board of Directors until February 2007.

    Kelly told the awardees that King was a firm believer in education and following his retirement the company thought of a way to commemorate his contribution with a scholarship...a “no brainer”.

    The Chairman went on to say, “We are partnering with you (awardees). You have shown promise, you have risen above the heap, you were chosen from 29, so you had to be deserving.”

    He told the awardees to “have fun, learn cultures, eat exotic food and go easy on the alcohol...somehow alcohol and education do not mix well”.

    The Chairman presented certificates to Bussue and Moven, and, in the absence of Tyrell and Fox, the certificates were received by their mothers.

    They were all allowed a few moments to address the audience and they thanked God and TDC for the monetary contribution, while one recipient remarked that “it was a timely scholarship”.

    The Scholarship is intended to assist students who are desirous of pursuing full time university studies at the Undergraduate and Post Graduate levels in areas, which include, but are not limited to, Agriculture, Architecture, Accounting, Business Management, Construction Management, Economics, Engineering, Information Technology, and Pharmacology.

    Applicants are required to maintain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher and must demonstrate outstanding achievement to receive a one-time disbursement US$5 000 dollars for one calendar year.

    The criteria for one being eligible to attain the Michael L. King Scholarship Grant also include:

    the scholarship is for undergraduate programmes;
    the scholarship is not open for Medical Sciences;
    the applicant must be a citizen of the Federation; and
    the applicant must have a letter of acceptance from the university of their choice.
