BVI, 24 July 2015 - Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool has expressed satisfaction with the direction that the Government of the Virgin Islands has taken to strategically get the community involved in the fight against crime.
Minister Vanterpool said, “One of things that we have to do is to be proactive in mitigating crimes. I am satisfied with the steps taken to involve the community in tackling the issue of illegal firearms. Gun amnesty is important and necessary and is a brilliant idea that I am certain will bear fruit, especially if we continue to reach out to the community in this amicable way”.
The amnesty was instituted by the Royal Virgin Islands Police for firearms and offensive weapons and is moving into its final week. The Government continues to invite the Community to turn in any prohibited weapons that they might have in their possession.
The Amnesty Campaign has been in effect from the beginning of July and the public is being kept abreast with information about campaign.
It is anticipated that persons will use this opportunity to turn over any prohibited weapons in their possession to the police by July 30, with no questions asked.
