BVI, 23 July 2015 - The city of Road Town will receive a face lift in time for the 2015 Emancipation Celebration.

The Ministry of Communications and Works, through the Public Works Department and the Office of the City Manager, will undertake a beautification project to address construction sites in the city, uncovered drains, uneven sidewalk slabs and the general upkeep and attractiveness in the heart of the Territory.

Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool and officials including City Manager, Mrs. Janice Braithwaite-Edwards and members of the Road Town Development Committee, were presented with a view of the issues being faced in Road Town on a recent walk through of the area.

Honourable Vanterpool said that it was important for the team to experience firsthand how the public endures the inconveniences of the ongoing projects within the city and find ways for the Ministry to mitigate the immediate problems and plan for the other issues in the near future.

He said, “We are looking at how we can improve the aesthetics of the city. We are looking at how we can enhance the lives of the people of the Territory.”

Honourable Vanterpool said the Ministry of Communications and Works and its relevant Departments will work towards a city-wide cleanup which includes work excavations being handled by Biwater along the parade route, rectifying uneven slabs, covering man holes adjacent Nagico Insurance on Boo Bay Drive, and additional greenery and lighting in the city.

The Ministry is also planning to open and clear walkway entrances to Main Street while looking into ways to improve the flow of traffic for pedestrians and motorists.

The Minister added that the Ministry is exploring the concept of parking garages in strategic areas of Road Town to help relieve congestion in the city, especially on Main Street where businesses are struggling due to limited parking spaces for customers.

The Ministry of Communications and Works is committed to developing the city of Road Town through strategic infrastructural enhancements that will provide economic growth.
