St. Paul’s draw first blood on Premier Division Title

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DEFENDING champions S.L. Hosford’s St. Paul’s drew first blood on the SKNFA National Bank Premier League Trophy after defeating Sol Island Auto Conaree in the first game of the Finals last Saturday evening (Jul. 25) at Warner Park.

Conaree opened the game looking the better of the two sides as Glenroy Samuel gave his team the lead with a tap in the 4th minute of the game.

Not to be outdone, Errol O’Loughlin hit the woodwork on 13 minute which forced Conaree’s keeper into a save and sparked a St. Paul's counterattack.

St. Paul’s levelled the score seven minutes later off the boot of Keithroy Freeman who continued his goal scoring ways and caused a ruckus behind the goal among his team’s supporters.

Still in attacking mode, St. Paul’s took the lead with a Bookie header in the 25th minute that sent their supporters into rapture.

On the brink of half time, Josh Leader squeezed the ball passed the keeper for a solid 3-1 lead that stunned Conaree’s players and their supporters.

In the second half, however, Conaree fought desperately to find a way back into the game, but their efforts were futile as rock-solid team defence by the St. Paul’s players thwarted their every move.

Following the final whistle, the St. Paul’s players then sped in the direction of their supporters to celebrate their victory as they are now just one win away from winning the title for the second consecutive year.

Head Coach of S.L. Hosford’s St. Paul’s Austin ‘Dico’ Huggins hailed his team for its resilience.

“I think it was a real championship performance after going 1-nil down as early as the first three or four minutes of the game, but I still had confidence in my guys. We normally play well from behind…we never say die! I feel very happy that we managed to get a win and that will put us at ease going into the next game.”

He also lauded his team’s defensive effort.

“We did well defensively! We got numbers behind the ball; players were being patient not diving in and allowing the opponents to go in the direction we wanted them to go, and I think it was a real defensive effort tonight.”

The SKNFA honoured the 1985 National Team that won the first ever OECS Championship.

That team had featured the likes of Gerrard Williams, Elvis Pepe Isaac, Clinton Percival, Eugene Dolphin, Orville Maynard, Ambassador Sam Condor and the late Elvis 'Star' Browne.

Game two of the Finals would be held on tomorrow (Jul 28) at the same venue.
