By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOR the fourth time in the history of the SKNFA National Bank Premier League competition, S.L. Hosford’s St. Paul’s Football Club have been crowned champions after defeating Sol Island Auto Conaree FC 1-nil last evening (Jul. 28) in game two of the Final.

The game’s only goal came in the 30th minute when Keithroy Freeman, who displayed superb ball control, got behind the Conaree defenders and found the back of the net.

In the second half, however, a desperate Conaree side tried to find an equaliser in order to force a third game, but every wave of attack was met by a sturdy St. Paul’s defence.

However, in the final 15 minutes of the game, Conaree turned up the heat on St. Paul’s players and won a number of corners and free throws; one of the latter which  came off of the head of Errol O’Loughlin but was denied by the crossbar, while a shot from Irandy Byron was save by goalkeeper Jamal Francis.

Every unsuccessful Conaree’s attack was greeted with loud cheer from St. Paul’s supporters who had found a home behind their team’s goal.

However, on the blast of the final whistle, St. Paul’s players sped over to their fans to commence an early celebration and were joined by former Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for that area the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas.

Following the game, St. Paul’s head coach Austin ‘Dico’ Huggins indicated that it did not go as he expected in terms of ball possession.

“The guys had to dig deeper and show some guts, but it is not all the time the game is going to be won by skills and tricks,” he said.

After the official announcement, S.L. Hosford’s St. Paul’s were presented the Championship Trophy and the players were given medals.

The SKNFA also gave out individual awards with Johannes Mitcham of Newtown FC being adjudged Rookie of the Year, while Glenroy Samuel of Conaree won the Golden Boot for the Most Goals and the Golden Glove for Best Goalkeeper was awarded to Jamal Francis who also won the League’s Most Valuable Player award.

Coach of the Year went to Austin ‘Dico’ Huggins.

The SKNFA also honoured James ‘Pink’ Howe for his contributions to the sports discipline.
