Press Release

July 30th, 2015  --  The double holiday this weekend is intended to commemorate the end of slavery in the British possessions in 1834 and to celebrate (mainly in Nevis) the cultural heritage of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The historical significance of Emancipation ought not to be lost in the merrymaking of Culturama.

For several years now the Zion Moravian Church has been commemorating this historical landmark with a concert on the eve of the Emancipation holiday.

Emancipation was really not so much an end but a beginning - the beginning of a long and arduous struggle for the self-realisation and development of the descendants of the enslaved peoples in these islands. The struggle continues.

As we the people of African descent commemorate the Emancipation of our Ancestors on 1st August 1834, the Zion Moravian Church will once again mark this event with its annual themed concert on Sunday 2nd August at 7.00pm.

The theme for this year’s concert is ‘Emancipation Come’ and was inspired by a book of poems written by the Rev Denise Smith-Lewis, a Moravian minister who served in St. Kitts some years ago, but who is Antiguan by birth, and now lives and works in Antigua.

The variety concert will include vocal selections, dancing, miming, and a number of instrumental items. One highlight of the programme will be presentations by Rev Smith-Lewis in person.

The evening promises to be historical, informative, entertaining and inspirational. Don’t miss it!
