Bird Rock, St. Kitts, July 30th, 2015 -- Toastmasters was officially introduced to the general public of St Kitts as Sugar City Toastmasters Club held its charter ceremony on 18th July, 2015. The ceremony was held at the Doreen Mc Mahon conference room, Customs and Excise department, Bird Rock.
It was an exciting event with entertainment and stimulating speeches before a contingent of Toastmasters and guests. Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Rolande Tobias during his keynote address urged that in order for us to practice effective communication we must first develop our listening, thinking and speaking skills. Expounding on the fact that Toastmasters is the only organization dedicated to developing the individual, he emphasized that members learn best in moments of enjoyment. He was joined by fellow Dignitaries of District 81; Toastmasters DTM Valerie Brazier, TM Juan Richardson and TM Amanda Vital-Bedminister, who traveled from St. Maarten to conduct training for the club leaders and officiate at the ceremony.
Also, in attendance was a representative from the Ministry of Education, Mr. Michael Blake who gave a very animated address in congratulating Sugar City Toastmasters Club with his opening statement, “I smell dignity and distinction”. Club President, TM Gillian Branford encouraged her fellow Toastmasters to set high standards for the club as a way to challenge themselves in reaching their full potential.
On 30th March, 2015, Sugar City Toastmasters was chartered as the first Toastmasters club on St Kitts and its membership has grown tremendously, earning one of the first membership building goals ‘Beat the Clock’ award. This club intends to provide a supportive and exciting experience which would empower persons to become effective communicators and leaders at a pace that is comfortable for them. At the ceremony, 20 individuals were installed as charter members of the Club and 5 individuals as new members.
The following officers were installed by DTM Valerie Brazier and charged with fulfilling the mission of the Club:

Vice President of Membership- TM Ian Branford
Vice President of Public Relations- TM Shamara Welcome
Treasurer- TM Kai Williams
Secretary- TM Patrice Bernier
Sergeant-At-Arms- TM Sharline Halliday
Sugar City Toastmasters club meetings are held every first and third Saturday at the H.S.
Hanley Conference room, Customs & Excise department, Bird Rock from 6.45pm to 8.45pm. Anyone interested in developing communication and leadership skills is welcomed to attend.
