Association Helps Students Adjust to Life in Taiwan

Association of St. Kitts and Nevis Nationals in Taiwan
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 31, 2015 (SKNIS) -- Stepping into a foreign country can be quite intimidating especially if it is half way around the world. Persons who travel to Republic of China (Taiwan) to study know this all too well.

It was this very reason that in March 2015 the Association of St. Kitts and Nevis Nationals in Taiwan was formed, stated Vice President of the Association Addea Brunder.

Brunder explained that members strive to foster a familial bond among St. Kitts and Nevis nationals living Taiwan while creating activities and programmes geared towards outreach and development.

“That is why our motto is ‘If people are of one heart, even the yellow earth can become gold’,” he said. “It’s good to have that type of support system so far away from home. We have to prepare them for life in Taiwan, school and most of all the culture shock.”

In an effort to make the students feel more at ease, the association has already planed trips to various locations in Taiwan and held a Fun Day in April. Upcoming events include a welcome party for the new students, an independence dinner, potluck and Christmas dinner.

The association also focuses on promoting its homeland as an excellent tourist destination.

“There are a lot of people in Taiwan who do not know about St. Kitts and Nevis. Most of them think it’s in Jamaica. I think by educating locals in Taiwan they will feel motivated to visit St. Kitts,” explained Brunder.

The Vice President said the association would not have been possible without the support of Resident Ambassador Her Excellency Jasmine E. Huggins.

“Her Excellency has been very helpful in our endeavours,” he said. “She is always a phone call away and we are truly grateful.”

There are currently 36 members in the association. The Executive Board includes President Rolhensha Henry, Secretary Nevilla Isaac, Treasurer Tiffani Jeffers, Public Relations Officer Donya L. Francis, Activities Coordinator in the North Jamella Fraser and in the South Landrith Isaac.
