BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A meeting held by the High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force on Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 12) saw some 60 retired and former police officers gathering to discuss the possibility of them lending their expertise to the fight against crime.

Held at the Police Training Complex, the meeting, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley, was attended by three retired Commissioners, two retired Assistant Commissioners, two retired Superintendents and several retired and former Inspectors, Sergeants and Constables.

While he did not provide details of the issues discussed and their specific outcome, he described the meeting as a success and indicated that a number of suggestions were made by the officers about improving the fight against crime.

“I would describe it as being very successful. It was a forum where they expressed ideas as to how we can improve our crime fighting initiatives. I can’t say how much of it we would be taking onboard, but I can say that the comments were relevant, well-placed and accepted and we would certainly consider the recommendations made.”

The Assistant Commissioner said an appeal was made at the meeting for the attendees to indicate whether or not they would be willing to assist the Police Force and, if so, in what capacity.

He said a number of them indicated their willingness at the meeting while others were given the option to do so privately, subsequent to the meeting.

“What was said is that at the end of the discussion anyone of them who was willing to come back and assist in whatever capacity, if they would indicate to us what capacity they are willing to serve in and discussions would be had as to whatever packages can be made.

“Some persons indicated that they would be willing to serve and are due to come in to have discussions with the Permanent Secretary and the High Command. Others were asked to subsequently indicate their willingness.”

In a previous interview with SKNVibes, Acting Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd had expressed the hope that as part of this initiative, the junior members of the Force would be able to glean from the skillset and wealth of experience of these retired and former police officers.
