Drivers in St. Kitts express concerns over blind turns

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THERE are many blind turns and blind spots on the island of St. Kitts and a number of motorists have voiced their concerns about some of them to this media house.

In their complaints, motorists told this publication that a very serious and/or fatal accident is in the wait at the junction of Pond Road and Stainforth Street in Newtown.

“I am so sick of that road now! Twice in one week I almost got in accidents coming out of that road, because you have to come on to Pond Road to see oncoming traffic. They need to just make that road a one way and call it George,” said one female.

Another blind turn, as indicated by motorists, is located at the top of Sprott Street that leads onto Cayon Street.

“Boy, I does think twice with this road because a partner of mine get in accident here around last February, then again in October. I don’t want to laugh, but because of the building you have to stick your head (front of the vehicle) onto Cayon Street to see what coming, and that’s dangerous as a driver,” explained a young male driver.

Blind corners can also be found at either end of the Old Road Bay as well as in Trinity Parish and Stapleton Village.

Speaking with four passenger bus operators, they all expressed that they would like these corners to be looked at for safety of drivers, passengers and also pedestrians.

“I mean, I’m running bus for nine years now and the dangers of these corners become very real during the morning rush. When you can’t see around these corners, you don’t know if something or somebody in the road. Government got to do something about them man,” said a bus driver.

An important concern of these motorists is the amount of traffic accidents, which they claimed most are due to speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Some of them suggested the erection of speed humps in populated areas and the installation of traffic lights at the junction of Cayon and Fort Street as well as at Five Ways, as a start to bring order to the flow of traffic and make the roadways safer for drivers and pedestrians.
