Operation Future’s Career Day piques campers’ interest

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EARLIER this week (Aug. 18), the Emergency Medical Services, a nurse, the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services Department and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’ Mobile Command Centre went to a scene at the St. Johnston Community Centre.

But unlike most other cases where an emergency situation would have taken place, they were in the area as part of the Career Day of this year’s Operation Future Summer Camp.

In a bid to expose the 60-plus youngsters to the varying careers, Operation Future’s founder Constable Lauston Percival and his team invited these organisations and individuals to educate the children their roles and responsibilities and introduce them to some of the equipment which use on daily basis.

The children were split up into a number of groups and each group received an up-close-and-personal view of the equipment and were given the opportunity to question the presenters on matters on which they may have been unclear.

They appeared enthused about all aspects of the experience, and this was confirmed by the campers with whom SKNVibes interacted.

Of particular interest to them however, were the Jaws of Life and the Spreader which are instruments used by the Fire Department when extricating individuals from vehicles involved in accidents.

The camera and telecom systems of the Command Centre and the way the mobile unit was designed to function were also points of fascination for the bright-eyed campers.

Officer Percival told SKNVibes that the purpose of the Career Day was to pique the children’s interest and stimulate thought about possible career paths.

“The purpose of the Career Day was to give the campers an idea and open their minds to some of the career choices which they can make when they grow up. We saw that some of them were really, really enthused about those who were there. They seemed really, really excited about seeing what equipment is used and I think it was a purposeful and successful exercise. I believe some of them left there having an idea of what they would want to do when they become older.”

Percival said he was however, somewhat disappointed in the turnout of the invited departments and organisations.

“The only disappointment is that we invited other departments like the Agro Processing Department, the Agriculture Department, Customs and several others. There were supposed to be at least 10 but all-in-all, it went well.”

The one-week day camp culminates tomorrow (Aug. 21) with a march through the streets of Basseterre and will end at the Independence Square.
