Don’t be caught unprepared for hurricanes and storms

Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE fact that the Federation escaped the possible effects of Tropical Storm Danny is no reason for citizens and residents to become complacent in their preparation regime.

This is the view expressed by Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris during a recent interview with SKNVibes.

When news of Danny’s approach broke late last week, many individuals were seen frequenting supermarkets across the islands, appearing to stock up on non-perishable items in the even that they would have been needed following the passage of the storm.

Several business houses in Basseterre and its surrounding areas were observed installing protective shutters on their glass windows and doors as an added precaution.

Dr. Harrisexplained that although some might remark that much preparation was made for the approach of TS Danny and there was no impact on the Federation, every effort must be made to ensure that the country is as prepared as could be for the approach of Erika and any other storm.

“In relation to all storms, we must take the most prudent approach and take the necessary precautions. We must be prepared rather than to be caught wanting. And in that regard, we managed to escape Danny but must not rest on our laurels. Listen to the advice of the authorities on storms and take their warnings and cautions very seriously.

“In relation to all storms the most prudent approach would be for all citizens and residents to take the necessary precaution in matters relating to hurricanes and storms, that we are prepared rather than to be caught unawares.”

He said preparedness would mitigate the changes of injury to individuals, damage to property and the general impact on the country.

The Federation should begin feeling the effects of Tropical Storm Erika late this evening (Aug. 26) into tomorrow morning.
