Great New Books Coming to St. Kitts and Nevis Schools from Macmillan Education and Hands Across the Sea

Press Release

August 29th, 2015 -- Every year since 2008 the child-literacy organization Hands Across the Sea has been sending storybooks, chapter books, information books, young adult fiction, and CXC Study Guides from leading publisher Macmillan Education to St. Kitts and Nevis primary and secondary schools and reading programs.

For the 2014-2015 school year Hands Across the Sea shipped 110 different Macmillan Education titles for a total of 2,477 books to schools on Antigua, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada, and for the 2015-2016 school year Hands will be sending new Macmillan Education books to Eastern Caribbean schools. Also, the publisher generously donated 1,150 new books to the 2014-2015 Hands Across the Sea shipment and 1,052 books and 340 literacy posters to the 2015-2016 shipment.

“We are thrilled to be serving St. Kitts and Nevis schools with relevant, Caribbean-related titles from Macmillan Education that children and teachers love,” said Hands Across the Sea Co-Founder and Executive Director Harriet Linskey. “As part of the annual Hands Wish Lists, educators specify the types of books most needed for their school, and each year Hands Across the Sea receives many requests for titles, particularly the Caribbean-themed books from Macmillan Education.”

“Macmillan Education is delighted to be working with Hands Across the Sea in their efforts to encourage children to ‘get hooked’ on reading,” says Hayley Tanner of Macmillan Education. “Our aim is to make high-quality reading material easily accessible to children across the region and it’s clear that by investing more time and resource, together we can have a greater influence and really make a difference.”

“Our dream at Hands Across the Sea is to help every primary and secondary school in St. Kitts and Nevis create a first-class lending library filled with new books, books that have been requested by each school’s educators, and that the library become an integral, essential part of the school,” says Tom “T.L.” Linskey, Co-Founder of Hands Across the Sea. “We believe that to get children hooked on reading you have to put new, exciting, information-packed books in their hands, and the partnership with Macmillan Education helps us do that. It’s been a great partnership with the region’s top publisher, and we look forward to delivering more of their outstanding books to Caribbean schools.”
