BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POLICE are pursuing all possible leads to bring to justice the individual who killed 21-year-old McKnight resident Jermaine Francis last Sunday evening in Newtown.

Francis, who hailed from Sandy Point but was residing in McKnight at the time of his demise, was shot to the chest at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 31) while on Upper Pitcairn Street in Newtown.

A police communiqué issued today (Sep. 3), stated that detectives of the Violent Crimes Unit are currently investigating the incident.

It also stated that “the victim was attacked by an unknown assailant who discharged a firearm at him, striking him in the upper body.  The victim died at the scene. The police are pursuing all possible leads in hope of finding and bringing to justice the perpetrator(s) of the crime”.

When this media house had arrived at the scene on the night of the incident, a small crowd had gathered on Upper Pitcairn Street, approximately 30 metres off Pond Road, where the motionless body of a young man was seen on the roadway with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his chest, just inches below the neck.

Residents in the area claimed to have heard when a number of shots were fired, but most of them remained indoors, while some individuals were outside of a Spanish Bar in the immediate vicinity.

Speaking with SKNVibes, one individual was very optimistic that the police would soon find the perpetrator “even if those who saw what took place fail to tell the police”.

“I am certain that the police will find the person who shot the young man. Look across the road at the top of that utility pole and tell me what you see? That is the reason for my optimism...a CCTV focusing directly on the street. All the investigating officers have to do is check it and they will see the images of the dead man and the person who shot him.”

However, another individual was in disagreement.

“I like the way you put it! Yes, the police should be able to recognise the images, but is the CCTV working? I don’t believe that it is working! Everybody passing here can see it once they look up. But, tell me something, would you commit a crime in the face of a CCTV if you know that it is functioning?”

According to SKNVibes’ record, Jermaine Francis’ death has taken to 20 the amount of homicides committed in the Federation for the year; six on Nevis and 14 on St. Kitts.

The police communiqué quoted the Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Ian Queeley, as saying: “We urge anyone with information that can assist the police in this crime, or any other crime to call any police station in the Federation or Crime Stoppers, our confidential hotline, at 1-800-8477 to share information.”
