Taiwanese Performers Kick Off St. Kitts-Nevis Independence Celebrations

By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 03, 2015 (SKNIS): The celebration of the 32nd Anniversary of Independence of St. Kitts and Nevis kicks off in Nevis tonight with a performance from a visiting cultural group from the Republic of China (Taiwan).

The Taiwanese young ambassadors will take to the stage at 7 p.m. at the Nevis Performing Arts Centre. This will be followed by an encore in St. Kitts at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) on Friday (September 04) at the same time. The visit and performance have become a tradition in recent years and is meant to celebrate the strong bonds between the two countries which became diplomatic allies in 1983.

“This is their way to bring cultural exchange and diversity across the borders that divide us so that the people from St. Kitts and Nevis and people of Taiwanese origin can begin to better appreciate the ethos, the history behind the cooperation that we have [and] the evolution of the people from both countries,” said Senator Wendy Phipps, Chairperson of the Independence Committee.

The performance is free and Senator Phipps encouraged persons to attend and enjoy the high display of talent that has become synonymous with the group.

“These presentations are normally at a very high standard because you can see based on the quality of the performance the amount of time and effort that went into rehearsal and precision … so it is an opportunity for us to see that,” Senator Phipps said.
