BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RESIDENTS of St. Kitts were on Friday evening (Sept. 4) treated to a scintillating display of Taiwanese culture by a 16-member group of Youth Ambassadors from that East Asian country.

The event, which was held in the Sir Cecil Jacob Auditorium at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, was a 90-minute interactive programme that highlighted six focal points of Taiwanese culture -  Mountain and Sea Spirits, Indigenous People, Min Nan, Hakka, Cuisine and High-end Technology.

Prior to the commencement of the show, hostesses Sandra and Lisa told the patrons, “When visiting Taiwan you must bring with you your camera, an empty stomach, a swimsuit, an enthusiastic and curious heart and prepare to shop.”

The first act was a dance dedicated to the Mountain and Sea Spirits as well as the various animals that found in Taiwan.

That act was followed by an exciting display of the various tribes in Taiwan.

“There are 16 different indigenous people, like Amis people, m for example, and we dress different and have different ways,” Sandra explained.

She also explained that Taiwan is a country of freedom and openly welcomes the chosen religion of its people.

“We practice in Taiwan Dollism, Christianity, Buddhism and Catholicim. We are open to them and we accept people.”

The two main groups of people in Taiwan are Min Nan and Hakka, with the former being more prominent than the latter.

Sandra pointed out that “different people have different dialects and within Hakka there are two dialects while Min Nan has one”.

Taiwanese cuisine includes a wide array of steam, stir fry and boiled delicacies that are sampled eagerly by curious tourists.

Sandra indicated that the cuisine peaks the interest of visitors and their favorites to try are Stinky Tofu, which is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and, as the name indicates, it has a stinky smell. They also have Bubble Tea, which is a beverage with marble-sized surprises inside.

The highlight of the evening was the group’s display that represented the high-end Technology that Taiwan produces, which include brands such as Acer, Asus, Apple and ROC.

Within the cultural display, umbrellas were observed in various segments.

When asked the significance of the umbrella, Sandra indicated that it is sent to families to wish that they have a child, but, on the other hand, when sent to a couple it symbolises dissolution of the relationship.

The final performance was an emotional dance which depicted Taiwan’s kind-hearted people and their continued support through disaster relief for tragedy stricken countries.

The Cultural Youth Ambassadors thanked the audience and Government for welcoming them and indicated that it was pleasurable visiting the Federation.

Among the attendees were Senior Government Officials, including Governor-General His Excellence Samuel Weymoth Tapley Seaton and Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Shawn Richards, and Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou.

The 16-member Taiwanese Cultural Youth Ambassadors are currently on a three-week tour, during which time they will visit St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Houston, Texas.

They are part of a 160-member group travelling around the world to spread the Taiwanese culture.
