The Great Commission and Us

Carl Greaux

One day a friend asked me, "What is God's objective for the church?" I pause and Matthew 28 verses 19 and 20 came to mind. "The Great Commission," I replied.

My friends, this Great Commission which has been given to the church by its King is that objective and nothing else will suffice.

I believe that God wants His name to be honored throughout the earth. He wants the whole world to be filled with the preaching of His love and His grace which were made known in the life of Jesus. He desires to call people of every nation to the light and give the gift of eternal life. By sharing the Gospel and training disciples, God is honored and His name is glorified.

No amendments may be offered to the motion. It is not debatable. It cannot be countermanded, for it is the command of the King. It is the duty of His church. It is the command of God for your life and mine.

You may say, "It's too big." Well, every businessman knows it is not enough just to have a definite objective and to spell it out clearly. You must also have, in addition to the long-range objective, a step-by-step approach which will enable you to reach that goal.

Firstly,  I think  it is important that we recognize that God will give His power to  His people in order to accomplish the goal of reaching the world with the message of the Gospel of Christ Jesus.

Secondly, I think there is a human resource as well. There is a divine key which God has given for this task to which we have been commissioned. Christ showed us the way He was going to reach the world. Jesus never traveled to the Caribbean or Athens, never preach on TBN, never went to Rome. Rather, Jesus invested His life in a small group of people. He trained them thoroughly, and He trained them to train others.

God has singularly designed it so that you are one of those who can most effectively perform the Great Commission that He has given to us all. You rub shoulders every day with many unbelievers. Therefore, you should look for any opportunity you can to reach these people.

God has given pastors and teachers to the church in order that they might equip the saints to do the work of ministering. According to Ephesians 2:19, every Christian is a saint and 2 Corinthians 5:17 and 6:10 tell us that every Christian is a minister with a ministry to performed.

You, as a Christian, have a ministry to which God has called you. And it is the ministry of the clergyperson to equip you to perform more effectively the ministry which God has given to you.

Today, ministers everywhere are catching the vision, and now churches are beginning to see the important need of training and equipping church members in small groups and private Bible studies for evangelism. Also, Christians are beginning to realize that evangelism is both their privilege and their responsibility.

So, as responsible Christians having such a privilege, let us look for and take advantage of any opportunity and share our faith in Christ by obeying His command in Matthew 28: 19 and 20 which states: “(NIV) 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Amen.
