Opposition Leader pays tribute on passing of Shane "Labby" Scott

By: Erasmus Williams, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts  (September 29th 2015) - Former St Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister and current Leader of the Opposition has expressed sadness at the sudden passing of Shane "Labby" Scott, one of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party young soldiers.

“We are all shocked with the confirmation that Shane/Shawn "Labby" Scott, native of Cayon, resident of Lodge Estate Yard, employee of the Social Security Board and Life-long Member of the Labour Movement passed away suddenly in the early hours of this morning,” Dr Douglas said in a statement on Tuesday, hours after Scott’s passing.

He said this latest sudden loss of a champion and soldier of the communities of Constituencies #7 and #8, “has prompted us to ask as has been asked by our elders of the past, "What is man?" But the question as it relates to our "Scott" as he's affectionately called is more than rhetorical.”

“Our fallen Soldier had a human soul and spoke out fiercely, compassionately, and loudly against Betrayal, Ingratitude and Treachery as an affront to his God, even if it meant a break with long established friendships and deprivation of the necessities of his human existence,” said Dr. Douglas, who added:

“He had a big heart, demonstrated time and time again from his Kindness, Love and Compassion as a trusted ally and friend at his home and in the communities he served so faithfully as an Advocate and SSMC Employee in a leadership capacity. He knew how to enjoy life, knew where exactly the Lime was, consumed volumes and plenty to his delight and in the process established himself as the jovial life of the Party to the dismay of "Bra Bread" his competitor and dear friend.”

“He worked hard and played hard and it was after a hard day's work at Social Security that he returned home as usual to his dear family to do all the things he's accustomed of doing...but alas, it was for the last time,” said Dr Douglas.

“We today salute and pray for his dear life partner, Phillorine, for being there for him through thick and thin; Akeel and Sharnelle, his children, who frantically tried in their own desperate way to keep him from falling off to his permanent slumber; and the medical team who attended him in his final hour as he came face to face with his mortality.

We salute his parents and mom in particular for bringing into this world an infant who, under her tutelage and guidance, was always conscious of his ancestral freedoms though snatched away many generations ago, and the indignities endured and the struggles pursued by our people to regain them.

We salute Mother Scott for transferring to her son that spirit of survival and truth that must enthuse and infuse us all at this time of our present struggle for social and economic justice and political freedom,”

“And today as we mourn his untimely departure and our profound loss, we extend to all of his family, colleagues and friends our condolences, and be fortified in knowing that we can say emphatically that Scott was Soul, Body and Heart. May he now rest peacefully from his Labour and await the Final Calling on that morn,” Dr Douglas concluded.
