Latin Festival Artist Bio

By: Latin Festival, Press Release

    JEFFREY EL CANTA LINDO

José Gabriel Severino, better known by his stage name El Jeffrey, is a merengue artist from the Dominican Republic. His major album "Mi Vida" enjoyed commercial and popular success by any measure. El Jeffrey first became a household name with the 80's merengue group, La Artilleria along with Nelson Gil, Joan Minaya and "La Rubia" Jaqueline. With La Artilleria, he recorded the major hits "Soy yo" and "Otra noche. In 1994, he produced his first solo album, “Por Que Te Siento Aqui,” followed by “Jeffrey Para El Mundo” (1998). His 2004 album “Mi Tierra” (2004) skyrocketed him to status as Merengue Artist of the Year. The albums “Mi Vida” (2005) and “Yo soy Merengue” (2011) followed. Latin Festival is thrilled to welcome El Jeffrey for the Latin Fiesta event Sunday October 25, 2015.

    MALA FE
Javier Ignacio Gutiérrez (born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic), better known by his stage name Mala Fe, is an interpreter and composer of Dominican merengue urbano. Mala Fe is most famous for his mega-hit single “La Vaca” from the late 90's. The debut album that followed in 2000, “Con su Loquera,” catapulted Mala Fe to further fame with songs such as “ El Jarro” and 'El Chivo,” in addition to of course “La Vaca.” The album rose as high as #5 on the Billboard charts in the Latin/salsa category. Our ears and dancing feet are all eagerly awaiting hearing Mala Fe’s hits live at Latin Fiesta 2015.

    NG2
Norberto Vélez and Gerardo Rivas, the vocalists who make up pop-salsa trailblazing duo NG2, were far from newcomers when they arrived on the scene. Vélez embarked on his performance career at the age of ten, playing traditional Puerto Rican music with local groups and joining the Orquesta Trompeta de Trovadores by age 17. Under the direction of Elías Lopés, Vélez developed from a talented musician into an adept singer. He joined up with Victor Manuelle's orchestra some time later, where he would meet his future musical partner.

Rivas meanwhile had gained experience as a musical entrepreneur early on with his group Gerardito y Los Rockolos. He studied percussion at the Escuela Libre de Musica, and upon graduation, joined up with Manuelle's orchestra as a percussionist. With Manuelle's blessing and assistance, the two decided to branch out and form their own group. With songwriting and production help from industry veterans like Manuelle and Ramón Sánchez, NG2 released their debut disc, Comienzos, in 2004. The record generated radio hits like "Algo Imposible" and "Quitémonos la Ropa," which reached the #2 spot on Billboard's Latin Tropical Airplay charts in the year of its release.

Really showing their own dynamic style two years later, the duo released their second album “Al Fin” on Sony/BMG's Discos 605 imprint. The hits from this album include "Como Amigo No," "No Me Perdones," and "La Nueva Generación." The band continues to tour stateside and internationally, and we can’t wait to welcome them to St. Kitts for Latin Fiesta.

    EL REY TULILE
From a very young age in the Dominican Republic, José Manuel Rivera showed outstanding musical talent—and music is in his blood. His father played in the orchestras of Cuco Valoy, Jorge Solano, and others. At age 13, he learned to play the saxophone, and enjoyed his first major appearance at the Fire Brigade Chapel of Santo Domingo. Soon thereafter, he was playing engagements with Monchi Capricho and Ramón Orlando.

In 1999 Tulile released his first solo album, and signed with MT & VI Records. The 2000 hit "La Cuca" was a huge commercial success in the Dominican Republic and worldwide, with tours of Latin America, USA, and Europe. The Merengue artist is one of the most popular in the Dominican Republic and beyond, and promises to keep us on our feet dancing for Latin Fiesta 2015.

    MARIACHI   UTPA
Since 1989, University of Texas Pan-American (UTPA) Mariachi Aztlán has been one of the best known musical groups both on and off campus. The UTPA Mariachi program was founded by Dr. Dahlia Guerra, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at UTPA, and is directed by Mr. Francisco Loera, who is on the faculty at the Department of Modern Languages and Literature and the Department of Music and Dance at UTPA.

The UTPA Mariachi Aztlán was founded to promote Mexican folk music and the culture of the Hispanic people for the benefit of the community of South Texas. The Mariachi has traveled throughout Mexico and America as musical ambassadors. The Mariachi represents the beauty of the Hispanic music and cultural traditions and creates a bridge of cultural understanding between two countries and two peoples. Its growing reputation for performance excellence initiated the recent invitation from the White House to perform for President Obama at a signing ceremony of an Executive Order renewing and enhancing the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. At a recent performance with the Houston Grand Opera, the UTPA Mariachi Aztlan premiered the stage production of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, the world’s first “Mariachi- Opera”. UTPA Mariachi Aztlán are ready to turn it up at Latin Fiesta in St. Kitts, and we couldn’t be more excited to experience their vibe.
