BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ACTING Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd, in giving an update on the recent drug bust to this media house, has informed that an autopsy has yet to be performed on the man who was shot and killed during the incident and charges are yet to be laid.

SKNVibes spoke with Liburd this afternoon (Oct. 3) and he indicated that investigations are still being made into the October 1 incident which took place at Conaree Beach and resulted in 124 pounds of compressed marijuana – with a street value of EC$930,000 - being seized.

Two males from St. Kitts and Nevis and another who is believed to be from a neighbouring Caribbean territory were taken into police custody during the sting operation.

COP (Ag) Liburd said while charges have not yet been laid, “charges are imminent”.

He also indicated that a date for the autopsy has yet to be set.

As for the officer(s) who were involved in the incident, Liburd explained that they are still on active duty and because there is some concern about their safety and security “they are not in their usual position as normal”.

At a press conference held on Thursday afternoon (Oct. 1), Assistant Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley told media representatives that because one individual was killed by another, the death is classified as a homicide. However, a Coroner’s Inquest would have to be conducted to determine whether or not the homicide was justifiable or not.

“A homicide is the killing of a human being by another human being; there are justifiable homicides, there are excusable homicides according to law. And in every death there would be an investigation. A Coroner’s Inquest would be held as part of the investigation to determine that.”

Liburd however told SKNVibes that the Coroner’s Inquest would not begin until completion of the autopsy.

He said he is still not in a position to indicate from which Caribbean territory the vessel originated.

    Background

According to the Police, sometime after 5:00 a.m. on October 1, they conducted a sting operation at Conaree Beach, where a pickup truck was sited and a vessel was approaching that from the Atlantic Ocean.

The police explained that when the two occupants of the vessel were “challenged”, one drew a firearm and opened fire on the police, prompting them to respond in similar manner, fatally wounding one of the men.

They have also informed that the two occupants of the pickup truck attempted to leave the area but were apprehended.

The police had seized 144 pounds of compressed marijuana during the operation and the other three individuals were taken into custody.
