Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 07, 2015 (SKNIS): The Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis continue to benefit from the friendship with the Republic of China (Taiwan), as 20 wheelchairs were donated to the Ministry of Health at the Joseph N France General Hospital (JNF) on Monday (October 06).

Andrew Skerritt, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, welcomed the gesture.

"This ceremony is timely as we are celebrating the Month of Older Persons here in St. Kitts and Nevis," said the Permanent Secretary, adding that it is fitting that the wheelchairs would be distributed at health centers and medical institutions such as JNF hospital, Pogson Medical Center, Mary Charles Hospital and the Cardin Home.

Mr. Skerritt added that some of the chairs will also be handed over to Social Services to assist with the care of senior citizens.

"It is said that the manner in which the country treats its seniors is indicative of its values; this is why we are happy to ensure that our senior citizens will also benefit from this donation," he noted.

The Permanent Secretary acknowledged the Government and people of Taiwan for the contribution.

"Taiwan has partnered with us on numerous initiatives that aim to advance the health agenda in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, " said Mr. Skerritt. "Ambassador Chiou, we appreciate this kind and timely gesture in partnering with us to ensure patients, clients and our elderly can have a more comfortable experience when using our facilities."

Dr. Cameron Wilkinson, Medical Chief of Staff, mentioned some of the areas in which Taiwan has tangibly assisted the Ministry of Health.

"Over the years we have benefitted tremendously from the generosity of the people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and their keen interest in the development of our health care systems," noting that they were actively involved in the setting up of the Intensive Care Unit  (ICU), the Emergency Medical Service (EMS), and the donation of a number of ambulances to which many persons, locals and foreigners have benefited.

The chairs were donated by Mr. Mike Hung, President of Mike Hung Products Co., Ltd (Taiwan). The company, which was established in 1970, is a professional manufacturer that specializes in chalk and crayons, customized garments and other items.
A similar ceremony was held in Nevis, where 10 wheelchairs was donated by the same company.
