Press Release

October 8tH, 2015 -- The Excellent Decade, a record of the last ten years of the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence’s activities and laureates, was presented last week to the Governor General of St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Tapley Seaton CVO, QC, and Premier of Nevis and Federal Minister of Labour and Social Security, Mr Vance Amory. The presentations were made by Mr J Emile Ferdinand, QC, of the OECS nominating Committee, and Mr Mark Wilkin, of the Carib Brewery in St Kitts.

The Caribbean Awards for Excellence is the only awards programme in the region which rewards excellence in the fields of Arts, Sciences, Public Contributions, and Entrepreneurship.  Professor Caryl Phillips an eminent novelist, essayist and critic, who was born in St Kitts & Nevis, was awarded the Arts & Letters prize in 2013. He  teaches at Yale University in the United States. The prize consists of a medal and a cash award of TT $500,000.

The Excellent Decade contains autobiographical essays of all 27 laureates who come from all the islands and territories of the region, from Guyana to Jamaica. It offers unique insights into how, from often humble beginnings, these super-achievers rose to the tops of their respective fields.

The ANSA Caribbean Awards is the only programme to have made such awards to a field of candidates which includes women, First Peoples, and West Indians of all ethnicities and locations. Three West Indians living abroad but who return to involve themselves in the life of the region (Prof David Dabydeen of Guyana, Prof Caryl Phillips of St Kitts Nevis, and Prof Liam Teague) have also been awarded.

The book has also been presented to libraries in Grenada and throughout the region. Similar ceremonies have taken place in Guyana, St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, and are scheduled for Jamaica, Barbados, St Kitts and the other islands.

The book is intended to provide a comprehensive account of the ANSA Caribbean Awards, from origin to present. More information can be found on www.ansacaribbeanawards.com, or we can be found on Facebook and YouTube.
