Red carpet and movie premier kicks off Latin Festival

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHAT began as a small party some six years ago has mushroomed into one of the Federation’s premier events.

It is the Latin Festival, and to officially kick start this year’s celebration, a red carpet, cocktail and movie premier event was held at the Caribbean Cinemas on Monday (Oct. 19).

A similar event was held last year and, much like that one, Monday’s provided the perfect atmosphere for chitchat over wine and a buffet.

Because Mexico is this year’s Latin Festival’s guest of honour, the food was inspired by that country and featured some of its signature dishes, including Empanadas and Enchiladas.

After a bit of socialising amongst the guests, who included Government Ministers the Hon. Shawn K. Richards and the Hon. Wendy Phipps as well as members of the Consular Corps, a brief opening ceremony was held shortly before the movie was presented.

The ceremony highlighted the events of the Latin Festival and reminded the guests of the positive effects that cultural integration can have.

An official of the Mexican Embassy in St. Lucia for the OECS, Maite Narvaez, explained that the week would give participants the opportunity to experience Mexico on St. Kitts soil.

“This week you are going to have the opportunity to see, to taste, to hear, to enjoy, to discuss Mexico, to see Mexico from many points of view” through the music, cuisine and the movie.

The Mexican movie ‘Norteado’, directed by Rigoberto Perezcano, addressed and exposed the realities of migration from Mexico to the United States of America.

Narvaez said the theme of the movie is one that affects individuals worldwide.

“The movie by Rigoberto Perezcano touches a very special theme, not only for Mexico but for everybody in the world, migration. The core of the movie is the progress and the problems in the framework of migration from Mexico to the United States.”

Marketing Manager of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority Saju Ng’alla said the Authority “has good reason to be involved in the Latin Festival” as it touches an emerging very lucrative Latin market which is becoming more and more important to St. Kitts.

He said the event also adds to the rich diversity of the culture within the island.

The storyline of the movie is that “Andres tries to cross the Mexican border into the United States. He stopped in Tijuana and after each failed attempt to cross the border he explores his feelings, evokes what he left in his village and appreciate what he has found in Tijuana Cata, Ela and Arsenio.”

The movie was viewed by an almost-packed theatre and according to individuals with whom SKNVibes spoke following the viewing, the style of the movie is not what one would have expected, but as it progressed the appreciation for that and the issues of migration and love grew.

Activities scheduled for this week’s Latin Festival include Art Exhibitions at the Venezuelan Institute, Theatrical Productions, a Food Tasting event, and a Pre-Latin Fiesta Party. The celebration will culminate on Sunday afternoon with the Latin Fiesta at Port Zante.
