BVI, 28 October 2015 - As part of Government’s mandate to ensure students’ reading and comprehension skills are strengthened, Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School (ESPPS) has embarked on a literacy campaign for the 2015-2016 school year.
Principal Mrs. Valerie Charles-Welsh said, “The aim of the campaign activities is to whet the children’s appetite to make them want to read, and for those who already read, urge them to read more. These activities will further enhance their reading, speaking and writing skills.”
The activities include weekly reading assignments that involve parents, a visit to the public library and storytelling time at the school.
Earlier this month, members of the Social Security Board (SSB), the school’s adopters, visited the institution and read a variety of stories with teachers and students. Lessons included student-centered activities using teaching aids such as placards and special word cards.
Commenting on the visit, Mrs. Charles-Welsh said, “The Director of the Social Security Board, Mrs. Antoinette Skelton and her team set an excellent example for young learners at our school by reading and relating to students. We are grateful that they too support and are helping to promote our literacy campaign.”
The principal said that other activities aligned with the literacy campaign will be held this Friday. These include a visit by the Bookmobile, and book presentation to five-year-old Miss Aviyah Ottley, cancer survivor and student at ESPPS.
A Book Tea Party on November 8 and a Fairytale Book Parade on November 27 are also on the school’s calendar.
The Ministry of Education and Culture is committed to creating a “Culture of Excellence” in all the Territory’s educational institutions.
