Jump up wid Foxy and feel De Bass

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young female competitor in this year’s Power Soca Competition is sending a warning to reigning champion Sugar Bowl that she would be gunning for his crown.

Kanava ‘Foxy’ Pereira threw her hat into the Soca Monarch bullring last year and saw success in making it to the final round of the competition.

And this year she is back with even more tenacity and possesses the confidence of an emergent victor.

Her most popular piece last year was the groovy ‘Addictive Wine’ and this year she is releasing two tracks for the 2015/2016 Carnival Season - ‘De Bass’ as the competitor for the Groovy Soca Monarch Competition and ‘Jump Up Wid Me’ for the Power Soca Monarch Competition.

    ‘De Bass’

Pereira writes most of her songs and she explained that ‘De Bass’, which is no different, is an extension of ‘Addictive Wine’.

“It started from ‘Addictive Wine’ where the drive behind the song was the bass. And if you take that away, the bass, the song is just an empty shell. I took that a little further and, in the song, I speak of the double meaning of ‘De Bass’.

“It also speaks of those ladies who have ‘de heavy bass’, which is the heavy bottom. The bass is the anchor just like the girls with the heavy bottom. In the song I’m actually telling people that our music has a bass drive to it and our girls are nicely set. I’m saying in the song that no matter what kind of bass you want we have it all.”

    ‘Jump Up Wid Me’

Last year, Pereira favoured her groovy song over her power song. But this year the tables seem to have turned with her favourite being ‘Jump Up Wid Me’, a piece that was written by her significant other, Marvin ‘Cool Ruler’ Maynard.

“My son jumps and waves for everything, so I did it for the children. It is clean and fun and I can see it being played for Children’s Carnival. It is telling people that it is Carnival time again and, because of its clean nature, the children can participate. It has a nice Trini-meets-Kittitian drive to it. This year I favour this song better than the other one.”

Both tracks were produced by Maynard and Pereira’s daughter Kirdejah Fahie did the backup vocals on the tracks.

    Being honest

Pereira readily admitted that she was not altogether prepared for last year’s Soca Monarch Competition and informed that having learnt from that experience she is now prepared as she could be.

“I noticed last year I wasn’t quite ready for the bigness of the show, so the onstage performance, backup, dances, etc., I wasn’t quite ready for those things and I felt that that really took me back. I didn’t expect such a large crowd either, but I am ready this year.

“I see myself going to the Finals with both songs. And I honestly feel Sugar Bowl has to watch it in the Power Segment because I am coming for him. This year my heart is really in the Power.”

Pereira said her contribution to the 2015/2016 Carnival Season is not limited to the release of these two songs, but she intends to release two other groovy songs and another power song.
