BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PRIME MINISTER Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris has assured the nation that there is no truth in the notion about his Government’s intention to restrict the ordinary man from importing vehicles as of next year.
Dr. Harris made this declaration yesterday (Nov. 3) at his Monthly Press Conference when asked if there was any truth to the rumour being bandied in some quarters.
In response, he pointedly said: “I think (it) is a reflection of the maladjustment of the Opposition. The things that they would say tell me that this is an opposition in denial. I want to remind them of the advice that the former Governor-General said mandate me, ‘In a democracy people must expect change. When the change comes, as it did on February 16, they must respect the change and move on with their lives.’
“If they were to do that they wouldn’t spend day after day talking mischief and silliness. They would spend the time making an objective determination as to how they lost so badly the faith and the confidence of the people; how Team Unity, which was a concoction, was able, as it were, to run them out of the offices which they now hold. Because it has to be a mad man and a mad leadership to say to people that under Team Unity you will can’t import any more cars, that Team Unity only wants Hosford’s and TDC and them to be selling cars, so you are going to stop that.”
The Prime Minister explicated that there is no entity in the Federation or outside of it that would hold his Administration in captivity, noting that “none can, none will! I have not made that commitment as a leader...”
Dr. Harris said he wants every person “who can get a car to get a car. Import it or buy it locally if you can. We are in favour of the free market, so that then is political mischief”.
He continued: “Just in the same vein, I mean every day you listen you listen to shore grapes. Nothing constructive, because that can’t be real! You can’t take a country that has gone miles ahead in ownership of cars and turn back the clock. What good will that do? No good!”
