BVI, 3 November 2015 - The Early Childhood Education Unit hosted ‘Stories on Parade’ and ‘Stories through Drama’ for children from 16 schools, on Friday October 30.

Children aged three to six showcased popular storybooks, displayed placards and wore costumes depicting their favourite characters in stories along the parade route from the Festival Grounds to the Central Administration Complex. At the Complex, the children dramatised the stories and gave musical presentations.

Early Childhood Education Officer, Mrs. Jerelyn Callwood said the parade was an extension of Reading is Fun Week and that the aim was to provide children with a strong foundation and appetite for reading. She added, “We are also increasing awareness among parents and guardians so that they too can see early childhood education as a priority.”

Mrs. Callwood said there are plans to continue the event in the future to further encourage a love for reading in children, specifically those attending preschool, up to grade two.

Chief Librarian, Mrs. Suzanne Greenaway encouraged persons to read daily, suggesting hard copy publications like newspapers, magazines, comic books, newsletters and novels, or online articles or books.

Mrs. Greenaway said, “Something remarkable and great happens to us when we read. We become smart, successful, creative, informed and knowledgeable people.”

Mrs. Greenaway also referenced a quote stating, “The man, who does not read, has no advantage over the man who cannot read.” She added, “Remember that nothing empowers you like reading, it has invaluable benefits which lasts a lifetime.”

The Ministry of Education and Culture is committed to improving early childhood education in the Territory and creating a “Culture of Excellence”.
