November 9th, 2105 -- With the recent release of her Groovy and Power entries for the Sugar Mas 44 Soca Monarch Competition, Odessa ‘IJAHNYA’ PEMBERTON has without a doubt proven that she can romp with the Big Boys. Her tracks “Pleasure” and “Mas Destruction” have sent shockwaves through the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and this talented entertainer is confident that her vocals and stage performance will leave the audience breathless and her competition floored.
Born and raised on the Sister Isle of Nevis, IJAHNYA is no stranger to the stage. She began performing in the St. John’s Primary School Choir at the tender age of eight (8). Her singing abilities blossomed immensely which catapulted her into the lead vocalist position in the 4Play Band. Her sultry but powerful voice was heard at venues such as the Carambola Beach Club, Governor’s House, and Patsy’s Bar and Grill.
IJAHNYA is widely known for actively engaging the audience while on stage. She became quite the sensation in 2014, as the sweet rhythms of the 4Play Band expertly led by IJAHNYA captured the attention and ‘waistlines’ of West Indies Cricketers Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo. The cricketers seemingly floated onstage during the performance entranced by the harmonious melodies belted out by IJAHNYA and were held captive until the end of the show.
“Music is Life” is a favourite line of IJAHNYA’s and she credits her singing and performing abilities to her richly musically talented family. Her mother was a clarinet player in the Defense Force Band up until her death in 2013 and her father a drummer in the popular Shells All Star Band. Her sister, La Donna and aunt Singing Vanny are also well-known local artists who sang in bands and participated in numerous competitions.
Although this is her first time entering the Sugar Mas Soca Monarch Competition, IJAHNYA has absolutely no fears and is excited to compete. Her wealth of experience will definitely be an asset as she promises to thrill the audience with energy driven performances from beginning to end.
