Books from Hands Across the Sea Arrive in St. Kitts and Nevis Schools

Gingerland Secondary School Nevis
Press Release

November 16th, 2015 -- The books are here! Hands Across the Sea is proud to announce that 5,840 brand new reading books, serving 3,260 children at 15 primary schools, secondary schools, and community reading programs, have arrived on St. Kitts and Nevis. Since Hands Across the Sea began assisting the federation in 2010, the child-literacy organization has sent 25,670 books to 36 schools, community libraries, and youth programs, reaching 8,880 children.

The 2015-2016 Hands Wish Lists shipment, which fulfills the "wish list" of books requested by educators, is the best -- the highest quality, the most targeted  -- in Hands Across the Sea's eight years of operation. To raise child literacy levels in a sustainable fashion, the organization's CLASS (Caribbean Literacy and School Support) Program utilizes three steps: 1. Send New, Amazing Books; 2. Create/Rejuvenate Lending Libraries; and 3. Sustain the Literacy Gains. On St. Kitts and Nevis, Dion Browne, the on-island Hands Literacy Link, works with each school to guide and support efforts at raising child literacy levels.

Hands Across the Sea thanks the generous St. Kitts and Nevis funders who showed that they believe in the power of reading and literacy by giving children access to top-quality, exciting, relevant books. Supporters and their adopted schools include: Christophe Harbour Foundation (Cayon Primary School, Deane-Glasford Primary School, Edgar T. Morris Primary School, Sandy Point Primary School, and Tucker Clarke Primary School ); Scotiabank Bright Future (Joshua O. Williams Primary School); Four Seasons Homeowners Foundation (Charlestown Primary School, Gingerland Secondary School); and FastCash (Saddlers Primary School). Hands Across the Sea also thanks the Ministry of Education of each island for their support of this endeavor.

Hands Across the Sea salutes the world-class publishers included in the 2015-2016 Hands Wish Lists shipment: Abrams-Amulet, Annick Press, Bamboo Talk Press, Campanita Books, Capstone Publishers, Caribbean Reads, DK Publishing, Hachette Book Group, HeyDay, High Interest Publishing, Highlights, Lee & Low Books, Macmillan Education, Papilotte Press, Pearson Education, Penguin Books, Random House, Rosen Publishing, Rosetta Press, Scholastic, Tiny Island Press, Townsend Press, and World Book.
