Prayer and moment of silence for Paris

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEMBERS and friends of the Alliance Francaise offered prayers and a moment of silence on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 17) for and in honour of the memory of 120-plus individuals who tragically lost their lives over the weekend via coordinated terror attacks in Paris, France.

Chairperson of the brief but significant ceremony held at the Alliance Fraicaise complex, Shawna Lake, who is the Honorary Consul of France in St. Kitts, said she was happy that the group was able to attend the event, noting the importance of standing collectively against acts of violence which affect not just France but also the world.

Lake conveyed to the group the sentiments expressed by Eric de La Moussaye, the Ambassador of France to St. Lucia at the Castries French Embassy, just one day prior.

“This tragedy that struck France to her heart is the violence of a war, and perhaps even worse because the victims were defenseless civilians cowardly murdered on Friday night. It is the humanity in its entirety that is concerned by this tragedy, which is quite clear as we witness the extraordinary momentum of solidarity shown to our country since Friday.

“By this attitude, we maintain that we will never give in to violence and that we will remain committed to our values of humanity, freedom and respect of human rights. I wish to take this opportunity to extend my profound gratitude to all those who offered their condolences.”

A prayer was offered by Father Manuel of the Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral Catholic Church, after which a minute of silence was observed.

On Friday evening, at more than five separate areas in France, bomb blasts and gunfire rang out leaving a long list of casualties in their wake with more than 120 conformed dead, more than 350 injured, approximately 100 of which were in critical condition.

Since the incidents had occurred, prayers and other expressions of solidarity have been offered on behalf of the people of Paris.
