November 26, 2015 -- Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris delivered a keynote address earlier today at the Commonwealth Business Forum in Malta where he highlighted the opportunities available for investors in St. Kitts and Nevis in the key economic sectors of tourism, manufacturing, financial services and agriculture.
Prime Minister Harris drew attention to the many challenges facing the Caribbean and St. Kitts and Nevis including climate change, high indebtedness and declining access to soft loans but also indicated his delight that "the local macroeconomic environment in St. Kitts and Nevis is showing signs of improvement; that inflation remains low, private sector confidence is growing and that St. Kitts and Nevis is projected to grow by 5% this year."
Prime Minister Harris also spoke about the Citizenship-by-Investment (CBI) Program as part of government's strategic efforts to ensure that we continue to leverage our intellectual capacity in developing innovative ways to spur economic growth. He emphasised, however, that although the CBI is important, his Government is committed to a diversified economy which facilitates opportunities for growth in a number of other key sectors. He also encouraged participants to come and "invest in a country which protects property rights and freedoms, which is committed to good governance, democracy and the rule of law."
Prime Minister Harris also met with representatives from The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Trust Foundation which is working to assist government in the fight against avoidable blindness and and mentoring of young leaders. Dr. Harris encouraged the Foundation to deepen its relationship with St. Kitts and Nevis to bring relief to persons suffering from diabetes related eye conditions and to offer training to our young people.
Prime Minister Harris also met with several Caribbean colleague Prime Ministers ahead of the Executive Sessions of the Meetings of Heads which begin tomorrow.
Prime Minister Harris is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Mark Brantley, Minister of Public Infrastructure, the Honourable Ian Liburd and St. Kitts and Nevis High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, His Excellency Dr. Kevin Isaac.
