BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER appearing at the Basseterre Magistrate's Court for a number of days to answer six drug-related charges, Ellia Jeffers was today (Nov. 27) convicted of importation of cocaine.

Sentence was handed down by Her Honour Josephine Mallelieu-Webbe this morning after finding Jeffers guilty of the offence. The Magistrate ordered her to pay a $65,000 fine forthwith, and if in default she would be sentenced to serve four years at Her Majesty’s Prison.

The incident which led to her conviction transpired last year September 6. She had reportedly returned to the Federation and, while at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, was found with a quantity of cocaine.

Jeffers was taken into custody and subsequently charged with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to supply and importation of cocaine by the police. She also faced three charges by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise Department.

Those charges were possession of cocaine under the Custom's Act, making a false declaration and making a false statement to a Custom's Officer.

She was convicted of all charges but fimed only for the importation of cocaine. There was no additional penalty on the other five charges.

At press time, SKNVibes is not aware if Jeffers was able to make the payment or if she is in police custody.
