Legislative agenda of Government designed to restore democracy and good governance in St. Kitts and Nevis, says Attorney General Byron

Attorney General, Honourable Vincent Byron Jr
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 28, 2015 (SKNIS): Attorney General, Honourable Vincent Byron Jr. has reiterated the legislative agenda of the Team Unity Administration during Wednesday’s (November 25) edition of the radio programme “Working for You.” Some of these include: the introduction of Freedom of Information Legislation, the Companion Bill, Protection of Information (Privacy Bill), introduction of Office of Tenure for Prime Minister Bill and Integrity in Public Life Bill.

“Those will be the initial bills that will give, as it were, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, the foundation, the fundamental basis by which those who are in public life, those who hold public office can be accountable to the people every day,” Mr. Byron said.

“These bills that have been tabled in the House, and have a first reading, we are now circulating with the general public. We expect to have a programme of consultation that people understand fully, what they entail, what they mean and so that they can have the general public engaged and understand what we have to do,” the attorney general added. Mr. Byron also disclosed that there will be constitutional reform that will include electoral reform.

The Attorney General also stressed that the Team Unity Government endeavours to give a fair share and fresh start to the people of the country creating a level playing field despite political affiliation or age. This, he said, they hope to achieve through the legislative agenda and the programmes of the government.

“We have members in our Unity Government who come from different backgrounds. Those who have supported Labour, those who have supported the People’s Action Movement and the CCM. With various members with different backgrounds, each should be protecting its members (supporters),” Minister Byron said.  “If we work together as a team, as a people, I think the country will grow from strength to strength.”

In looking back at the activities that propelled the formation of Team Unity, Minister Byron referred to the Motion of No Confidence filed by the opposition in 2012 in the St. Kitts and Nevis Government that sparked the movement. He pointed out that the ensuing court battles pertaining to the motion and boundary changes had a final outcome on the change in government compelling a Team Unity Government to work at restoring democracy and prosperity.

“A Government of National Unity would be working to establish good governance in this country. And so for us, a good governance agenda means we would be restructuring some very fundamental laws in this country, changing them and introducing them over the term of our office,” Minister Byron said.
