CONTEXT: Violence against women affects 1 out of 3 women in the Americas and can have long-lasting impacts, including physical injury, unwanted pregnancy, abortion, sexually transmitted infections (including HIV/AIDS) and a range of negative mental health outcomes. In recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the 16 days of action that follow, PAHO/WHO and its partners will discuss why violence against women is a human rights violation and public health problem and how to move from policy to action.
