Harris Basketball League finals: Inner City Ballers one game away from championship

Inner City Ballers’ Ansel Raven (no 06) rises to block Fair Share’s George Gaton (with the ball), but the Fair Share player made the score

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (December 15, 2015) -- In a closely fought and hotly contested high tensioned second game in the final of best of five on Monday evening December 14 at the Molineux basketball hard court, colourful player Ansel Revan was on overdrive as he scored 29 points in a night when his team, Inner City Ballers, beat Fair Share 90-82.

Having won the first game in the final of best of five, also by close but slightly wider margin on Monday December 7 (87-76), all Inner City Ballers now need to lift the revamped and highly valuable Harris Basketball League championship trophy is to beat their opponents in the third game that is due to be played on Wednesday December 16 at the same venue.

The league which is sponsored by Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and the area parliamentary representative, the Hon Dr Timothy Harris, started twelve years ago. This year’s league opened at the newly refurbished Molineux basketball hard court on October 10, but has been largely affected by rain delays, and Games Commissioner Karla Carty hopes that they will be blessed with clear skies on the Wednesday.

If Inner City Ballers achieve this feat, they will have in style reclaimed the league championship which they first won in 2007 and lastly in 2012. The formidable combination of Ansel Raven, Brian Morris, Cameron Matthew, Sylvester Whyte, Leverette Taylor, and Kerry Lowry could carry the day for them.

But all is not lost for Fair Share players, who have not had the company and services of the evergreen Shawn ‘Shaba’ Forbes for quite some time now. They still have the slim, yet possible, chance of winning the remaining three games, if the power-packed trio of George Gaton, Ray Liddie, and Devon Farrell could up their game by the slightest of a fraction. They would be walking the tightrope to achieve that feat, but to ease off the pressure on them they have in their arsenal Denvor Farrell, Samuel Caines, and Colis Maloney.

While Fair Share got to the finals by dismissing the defending champions Strivers in two straight games at the semi-final stage, same was not true for Inner City Ballers who were taken down to the wire by the up and coming Redemption Squad with the likes of Livan Lee who singlehandedly amassed a total of 47 points in one game when they beat Inner City Ballers in one of the best of three semi-final games.

The game on Tuesday, which was overseen by three veteran referees, Dion Toussaint, Troy Roberts and Nigel Burroughs, was action packed from the first whistle and was tightly contested. Inner City Ballers led all the way through, having led 23-15 at the end of the first quarter; 38-37 at half time; 65-58 at end of the third quarter; and winning 90-82 at the end of the game.

Ansel Revan was in his element and did not disappoint the unusually small crowd of spectators, as much as they would have loved to have a larger crowd cheering them on. By the end of the game, he had scored a total of 29 points, returned five defensive rebounds, four offensive rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Others on his team were Brian Morris (21 points, seven defensive rebounds, eight offensive rebounds, two assists, and two blocks), Cameron Matthew (17 points, five defensive rebounds, four offensive rebounds, three assists, two steals, and three blocks), Sylvester Whyte (11 points, six defensive rebounds, and three offensive rebounds), Leverette Taylor (eight points, three assists, and two steals), and Kerry Lowry (four points, three defensive rebounds, two offensive rebounds, two assists, and two steals).

Fair Share players had an equally fair share chance at the boards. Towards the end of the game there were sporadic heated arguments, but the players they are, they went by the words of the referees at hand. George Gaton led the way for them, scoring 27 points, returning six defensive rebounds, five offensive rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

His teammates measured well too. They were Devon Farrell (25 points, seven defensive rebounds, eight offensive rebounds, and one block), Ray Liddie (18 points, four defensive rebounds, three offensive rebounds, four assists, and two steals), Denvor Farrell (eight points, four defensive rebounds, three offensive rebounds, and two assists), Samuel Caines (two points, three assists, and two steals), and Colis Maloney (two points two offensive rebounds, four assists, and two steals).
