Alsanarda Hanley wins Miss Swimwear Crown after ending modelling hiatus

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER a two-year absence from the stage, model, mother and teacher Alsanarda Hanley has been crowned the first-ever National Carnival Miss Swimwear Queen.

Hanley’s two-year stage absence was from her modelling career, but she stepped back into the limelight last evening (Dec. 20) at the Miss Swimwear show with five other young ladies, all of whom put on stellar performances in the five segments of the event.

She achieved best scores in the Floral Splendor, National Pride and Birds of a Feather Segments while First Runner-up Sidamo Jones won the Creative Wear and On-Stage Interview Segments, as well as being named the Most Popular of the contestants. Shanika Joshua was named Miss Congeniality and the Chairperson’s Award was given to Vanessa Detouche.

As the contestants stood on stage anticipating the announcement of the winners, Hanley said she was sharing a light moment with Jones.

“I was happy because I was already awarded three of the Segments and Sidama was already awarded two. Honestly, we were on the stage talking and having fun. We did our best and we were having fun. I was kinda glad that I was at that stage and that it was soon over. When the announcement was made I was happy because I did it. All the hard work paid off.”

Hanley told SKNVibes that she is no stranger to the stage having been entering pageants and shows since she was five years old. And in 2011 she began her modelling career, only to take a break three years in.

“I’m a mother now so it was time to take a break and pay attention to my daughter. She is one year old now so I needed those two years just to dedicate my time to her. I love modelling, I love pageants and it was also a way for me to participate in Carnival. It has been a while since I have been on the stage so I decided, hey, let me try it again.”

As for what is next, the Washington Archibald High School Visual Arts teacher explained to this publication that she is open to representing the Federation further afield and is looking forward to promoting her platform.

“I hope to promote my platform ‘Holistic Development through Education of the Arts’ where I can help to influence artistes to come together to put on more shows and just to educate them to use their talents to their full potential and to practice more. This way, they can have the support of the Government and the community.”

She said promotion of the arts could also help with the crime problem.

“The arts is something more positive for them to enroll in. They would be able to use their talents instead of idling on the streets, idling on the corner, being distracted. Once they enroll in the arts, whether it is dance or drama, painting, music, they would be able to channel that energy positively and have a better future.”

Hanley hails from St. Johnston Village and she extended thanks to all, first of whom is God Almighty, for helping her along her journey.
