Orngel Erskine snags National Carnival Queen crown

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CONSIDERED by some as the “underdog” of the National Carnival Queen Competition, Miss St. Kitts Music Festival 20 Orngel Erskine proved herself and left the competition with the crown and coveted title of the Sugar Mas 44 National Carnival Queen.

She appeared on stage last evening (Dec. 27) along with the other competitors, Miss Fast Cash Jaheida Lewis, Miss Development Bank Rohonda Devent, Miss FLOW Khyla Brown, Miss St. Kitts National Bank Evania Thibou and Miss Carib Brewery Jahnel Nisbett, before a large audience, each having their sight set on the crown.

Appearing in five adjudged segments, Swimwear, National Pride, Performing Talent, Evening Wear and Onstage Interview, the girls wowed the audience with their colourful costumes, creative evening gowns and mesmerizing swimwear. They also displayed their brilliance in the Interview segment during which they were asked two questions, one on their biography and the other on their platform.

At several points in the show, the wind and rain were unleashed causing an array of umbrellas to be opened over the heads of audience members. Some, who did not have the benefit of such shelter, scampered to the nearest tent for cover. "The show must go on" seemed to have been the mantra of the evening because the wind and rain were not allowed to force the postponement of the event.

Brown was successful in the Swimwear, Performing Talent and National Pride segments while Erskine was successful in the Evening Wear and Onstage Interview segments.

However, it appears that Erskine was consistent throughout the competition and amassing a total of 759.5 points, proved that of the lot, she was worthy of wearing the crown.

Coming in 31 points behind is Brown in the 1st Runner Up position and coming 50 points behind her in the 2nd Runner Up position is Nisbett.

Erskine also left the competition with the Chairman’s Award while Brown was named Most Popular Contestant Online.

The coronation was performed by Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris and the show was hosted by Jason Davis and Jackiema Flemming.

And to allow for a smooth flow of activity during segment changes, entertainment was provided by Sylvester Masquerades, Dejour and the KC5 Band.
