BASSETERRE, St. Kits - THE future of calypso and pageantry in the Federation looks bright with two promising individuals who recently captured the Junior Calypso Monarch and the Miss Talented Teen crowns.

On Saturday evening (Dec. 26) at the Sugar Mill on Port Zante, the 2015/2016 Miss FLOW Talented Teen and the Sugar Mas 44 Junior Calypso Monarch Competitions were held among seven high school young ladies and 11 youthful calypsonians respectively.

It is often seen and heard that one or more individuals who appear onstage are criticised, but all contestants of the two events must be commended for the tenacity and boldness they exhibited as well as in representing their schools well.

The Charles E. Mills Secondary School was represented by Thalia Wigley, Washington Archibald High School by Kaliyana DeSuza, Jahnika Francis representing Verchild’s High School, Dominique Phipps stood for the Immaculate Conception Catholic School, Kadeema Blanchette represented Basseterre High School, Cayon High School was represented by Lavida Audain and Saddlers Secondary School was represented by Zubaida French.

The seven young beauties appeared in five judged segments and sweeping four of them was Basseterre High School’s Blanchette.

She won Best Ambassadorial Speech, Ambassadorial Wear, Teenage Evening Wear and Onstage Interview, while Verchild’s High School’s Francis won the Performing Talent segment.

Loud applause and cheers burst forth from Basseterre High School students, teachers and supporters when Blanchette was named and crowned the 2015/2015 Miss Talented Teen with a total of 379 points. She was also named Most Popular Contestant Online.

Winning the Chairperson’s Award and the Chairperson’s Chaperones Award, and having amassed 340.5 points, Francis was adjudged First Runner-up’. And just 1.5 points behind Francis was Wigley in the Second Runner-up spot, while DeSuza, who was named Miss Photogenic, occupied the Third Runner-up position with 339 points.

Audain was named Miss Amity and the School Spirit Award went to the Basseterre High School.

The junior calypsonians brought their A Game so much so that it was suggested that some of them be featured during this evening’s Senior Calypso Monarch Finals.

The issues addressed include crime and violence, bullying, politics and setting proper examples for children.

Singing Sensation of the Basseterre High School’s composition offered a solution to the bullying problem, and according to her, a combined effort is needed. Her commanding stage presence, confidence and good performance of the song were what gave her the edge, causing her to cart off the crown.

She outperformed last year’s Monarch Mighty Snookie of Charlestown Secondary School, who had to settle for second place, while Duke Devaughn of Charles E. Mills Secondary School placed third and the Mighty T of the Basseterre High School came in fourth.

Members and supporters of the Basseterre High School must be beaming with pride as the winners of both competitions are from that learning institution.
