By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 29, 2015 (SKNIS): Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, has congratulated Oscar “King Astro” Browne on his stellar performances during the National Calypso Monarch competition on December 28.

Prime Minister Harris, who joined hundreds of spectators at the Sugar Mill at Port Zante, said that he was thoroughly entertained throughout, noting that the show was well organized. He said that the crowd was thrilled by the calypsonians’ performances, noting that this speaks to a bright future for the art form.

In extending words of commendation, Prime Minister Harris said, “I would like to congratulate King Astro for recapturing his crown. Astro has once again managed to make history and this was not an easy task as all of Monday night’s performances were of an extremely high quality.”

Oscar “King Astro” Browne is no stranger to the calypso stage. Born in Brown Hill, Nevis, Browne made history during the 43rd National Carnival when he was the first Nevisian to capture the Calypso Monarch title.

He again made history as he successfully contested the Culturama Senior Calypso Monarch title in August of 2015 singing the ever popular “I Want To Cry’ and ‘X-Tra-Verse’ and was the first to represent the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis at the Leeward Island Calypso Monarch competition in Anguilla as reigning Culturama and National Carnival Monarch.

The Nevisian calypsonian, who performed ‘Reparations’ and ‘Throne Speech’ on Monday night, amassed a total of 759 points to retain his crown, becoming the first Nevisian to win back to back National Senior Monarch titles in the process. Both songs were written by Mr. Creighton Pencheon. Veteran Singing Jackie took 1st Runner-up with 736 points; I Soursop placed 2nd Runner-up with 733 points; and Calypso Craig placed fourth with 729 points.
