Colourful troupes take centre stage at Grand Parade

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A kaleidoscope of colours, an array of feathers, an assortment of decorative gems, curve-hugging and accentuating pieces, gyrating waistlines and an explosion of creativity hit the streets yesterday (Jan. 1) where six troupes were on display during the Sugar Mas 44 Grand Parade.

The event saw involvement from the Junior Carnival participants, the Sugar Mas 44 Grand Marshall and a number of folklore groups.

The highlight of the parade was a stage that was erected on the Bay Road in front of Ram’s Supermarket on which each troupe had the opportunity to perform before judges.

While hundreds of individuals lined the streets along the jam route, hundreds were also gathered in the Bay Road area observing the various performances which came from the Ultra Carnival troupe, Ashley Allers’ Glitz and Glamour, Banker’s Mas Camp’s Golden Memories, DFX Entertainment’s The Other Side of Midnight, Solid SKB’s Garden of Eden and Splash Mas’ Phenomenal.

The musical entertainment for the various troupes was provided by the Nu Vybez Band International, Small Axe Band, Grand Masters Band, Kollision Band, Real Right Entertainment Hi-fi and Xtreme Hi-fi.

All of the troupes were colourful and very expressive with a couple using props in their presentations.

Of particular note, however, was Banker’s Golden Memories, the presentation of which was carefully orchestrated to evoke thoughts of life on St. Kitts in years past.

The good ole ‘po’, enamel cups, a goose (which has now evolved into an iron), a May Pole, bath pan style washing of clothes and a clay pot were part of the interesting presentation. They even went to the lengths of constructing a portable ‘out house’ or latrine made of galvanise. And the secret was revealed as the door of the ‘out house’ was opened and a man was seen inside.

Chairperson of the Adult Parade Committee Candice Caines told the media that the event was a success, especially since the number of troupes had increased from last year’s parade and it began early enough for the judging aspect to be concluded shortly after 5:00 p.m.

The Sugar Mas 44 festival continues today with the Last Lap jam which, as the name suggests, is the revellers last chance to become involved in what has been described as the biggest street party in the Federation.

There is also mounting anxiety as the various troupe camps and bands wait for the Carnival Committee to announce winners of the street activities.

It was expected that these would have been announced before midday, but at press time nothing was heard from the Carnival Committee.
