J’Ouvert results being questioned; some troupes displeased

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – INFORMATION reaching this publication suggests that some of the results for the street activities of Sugar Mas 44 are inaccurate and might lead to a new winner for the Best J’Ouvert Troupe.

This was confirmed by Wingrove Hicks of the Grand Masters Band, who explained to SKNVibes that yesterday afternoon (Jan. 11) he was called by the Carnival Committee and asked to attend a meeting that evening.

Hicks said he learnt of the situation when he got there.

“I got there early and, just before entering, I was briefed by someone about the reason for the meeting and we all went in there and we started resisting very early in the meeting; that’s Grand Masters, Ronnie Rascal and Small Axe. And Ivor Blake (and) the Carnival Committee were not adhering to our request, so we left the meeting. Out request was that the decision cannot be changed at this point in time and we have no credible information why they want to change. It could be gerrymandering or plain stealing.”

Hicks said while it was indicated that a mistake may have been made, they were not given any details. He explained that they were further told that rather than Ronnie Rascal’s Xtreme Nation Troupe winning the Best J’Ouvert Troupe title, it should have been given to the Masquerade Devils.

“What I heard is that they now decide that Masquerade Devils is the winner and not Ronnie Rascal for the J’Ouvert Troupe winners. And the other positions, Small Axe Shiggidy Shack which would have been First Runner-up is no longer because Ronnie Rascal moved down to First Runner-up and Grand Masters, GM Addix who was Second Runner-up moved out the mix, because Small Axe is now Second Runner-up.

“We are not accepting! Small Axe, Grand Masters and Ronnie Rascal are not accepting it, because this is a competition held since 26th December and they now decide to change the decision for whatever reason today. I have a serious problem from the point that it’s either the Carnival organisers, whether through its sub-committee Chairperson or whoever, they have erred as well as it could be the judges as well, as it could be the reputable accounting firm Grant Thorton. I do not believe it was the accounting firm. I believe the accounting firm would have calculated whatever was fed to them. So it is either the committee itself does not know what it is doing…and because they don’t know what they are doing, it’s a possibility that they have chosen judges who do not know what they are doing either.”

SKNVibes contacted the Chairman of the Street Activities Sub-committee Ivor Blake who said: “We are in the process of reviewing those scores because of an omission we found, and we will release a press release to indicate exactly what transpired shortly.”

He also confirmed that a meeting was held last evening with representatives of the J’Ouvert Troupes.

Contact was also made with Ronnie Rascal and a representative of the Small Axe Band, both of whom indicated that they prefer to reserve their comments until the Carnival Committee’s press release would have been disseminated.

It is being suggested in some quarters that the current situation has led to questions being asked about the results of other Carnival activities.
