Did PM Trudeau make any commitment to lift visa restriction on SKN?

Michelle Rempel and Tony Clement

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWO Canadian politicians yesterday (Jan. 11) wrote to that country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion seeking to know if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had made any commitments to lift the visa restriction imposed on St. Kitts and Nevis.

The politicians, according to a press release from Canada’s Conservative Party, had written to the Foreign Minister following an article in one of the Federation’s newspapers, which reported that St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris and Foreign Affairs Minister the Hon. Mark Brantley had raised the  visa issue with Prime Minister Trudeau.

“Official Opposition Foreign Affairs Critic Tony Clement, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Critic Michelle Rempel, today wrote to Liberal Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion asking if Prime Minister Trudeau made any commitments to lift visas on St. Kitts and Nevis residents during his recent visit,” the release stated.

It also stated that the two politicians asserted that the policy of imposing visas on residents of the twin-island in November 2014 was not done lightly by their Government.

“Canadian Border Services, immigration officials and foreign affairs officials, as well as the media, noted attempts by Iranian nationals using St. Kitts passports to enter Canada. In some cases, it was noted that Syrian nationals had attempted the same. And in other cases involving the United States Treasury Department, Iranian nationals under contract to the regime in Tehran were using St. Kitts passports to launder millions of dollars for the mullahs in Tehran.

“It is vitally important for the strength of our sanctions policy against the Iranian regime, one of the world’s greatest offenders of human rights, that policies which preserve Canada’s strength and security are not weakened. That is why Canadians need to know just what key policy commitments Prime Minister Trudeau may have made to the Prime Minister of St. Kitts,” the release quoted Clement and Rempel as saying.

After a 10-day vacation at an undisclosed location on Nevis, Prime Minister Trudeau, his wife Sophie and their children - Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien - were bid farewell by Prime Minister Harris and Minister Brantley at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport as they winged out for Canada on Friday (Jan. 8).
