AG addresses rumour on PM Press Secretary’s resignation

Attorney-General Hon. Vincent Byron Jr. (L) and PM Press Secretary Clecton Phillip

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ACCORDING to sources close to the Government, Clecton Phillip has resigned his post as Press Secretary to the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, but this information could not have been confirmed by the Attorney-General.

Speaking with this publication today (Jan. 15), Attorney-General the Hon. Vincent Byron Jr. said he was not aware that Phillip had tendered his resignation.

“I can’t speak to that, I am not aware of that. I do know that Mr. Phillip is under a one-year contract and as such I am not certain if that [resignation] is so. But I expect that we would have to be considering one way or the other if that would have been reviewed or if he would have wanted to go back to his private practice.”

Phillip, a businessman, also known as a social activist, was one of the many individuals who was regularly heard on WINN FM’s ‘Inside The News’ and ‘Voices’ programmes in support of the tri-party Team Unity while it was in opposition.

He was also the General Secretary of the People’s Labour Party; a political party formed by now Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris and former Deputy Prime Minister Sam Condor.

Following Team Unity’s success in the February 16, 2015 General Elections, Phillip was appointed Press Secretary to the Prime Minister but was almost invisible and only seen at the PM Monthly Press Conferences.

It was noted by media practitioners that he rarely sent out Government press releases and, if so, most of them would have already been disseminated by the St. Kitts-Nevis Information Service (SKNIS).

Media practitioners were also perplexed by the fact that the Director-General of SKNIS was the one who had twice accompanied the Prime Minister when he went abroad on government’s business and not the Press Secretary.

Only a few days ago Opposition members had indicated that Phillip and the Prime Minister “do not see eye-to-eye”.

This media house, like many others in the twin-island Federation, awaits an official statement from the authorities concerning the PM Press Secretary’s alleged resignation.
